iPhone Filmmaking Apps worth a look

Anyone out there thinking of making a film based on Hangin’ with Friends? I am. That would combine some passions (friends.. hangin’), AND it would be the only chance I’d have at beating my friend Lauren who essentially ruined that game for me. Making movies about apps could end up being like shooting into the monitor (If you’ve never done that, try it. You’ll feel like a 5-year-old again for about 5 seconds before you realize someone might be watching you). However, making movies WITH some of the amazing apps out there can be transformative. Your DSLR doesn’t come with screenwriting and storyboarding software or an app that has a countdown to magic hour. There are a lot of lists of cool apps out there for filmmakers with iPhones but many of them are for using your iPhone to help make films with some other camera. Those are some cool apps too, but here’s a list of cool apps if you are planning on making films with your iPhone as the capture device.

Almost DSLR

This is a camera app that gives you a lot of control, but its also the app of choice when dealing with EnCinema’s 35mm SLR lens adapter for ALMlive’s mCam rig. I am in the process of trying this stuff out and will eventually come out with a hands on review. The app is cool. The full rig is interesting but has its drawbacks. There are, however, no other ways that I have found to get the DSLR depth of field on an iPhone. Here’s a video that is on the almost DSLR site that was shot with this rig. Its a music video and it looks like the lyrics are not great for kids, however its in french, so unless your family is bilingual I think its pretty safe.

That vignette is definitely not added in post. Thats an artifact of
shooting with the 35mm lens adapter, so if you’re looking for clean
edges, just use the iPhone camera or mCam’s wide angle lens that comes
with its adapter.

For the rest of these apps, I’m just using the descriptions from the
app store as I don’t own any of these apps. I think they’re pretty
cool though, and we’d love to hear anyone’s thoughts if they’ve
actually used these apps.

  1. I’ve used almostDSLR pretty extensively, but it’s almost too full featured. There’s buttons and switches all over the screen and it can be a little intimidating.

My favorite recording app is Filmic Pro. Everything is very intuitive and flexible, it allows you to lock focus, white balance, and exposure, and also shoot with 2:35:1 bars. They are going to implement a screen flip feature in their next update, so it will be useable with the multitude of Dslr lens adapters available for the iphone. Awesome app, and the guys that made it are really cool about questions and comments.

    • Filmic Pro is great. We are big fans of the app as well. Reliable updates and a company that really cares about the iPhonefilmmakng community.
For some of us that really want to geek out and play with the framerate- this app seems to have done it right. Easy to experiment with and
fun to see different results - we love the look of 24p.

  2. Just purchased the app our sales/marketing rep had great things to say about the app and the creator who happened to be on hand in the Dominican Repbulic for a shoot.
